Thinking About An IPhone. But Is AT&T Worth It?
February 8th, 2008 by NathanI have been thinking about getting an iphone as I really need a new phone and it seems like a very handy gadget. I would like to have one item that holds all my music, phone numbers, the internet, etc. but I don’t know if I am prepared to switch from Sprint to AT&T. The other day I had almost made up my mind to buy an iphone when I read a news story saying there was outage on the AT&T network in at least 18 states that lasted quite some time. Now to be fair the voice network never went down only the data network. I took this as a sign to put off buying the new iphone for awhile but I am sure I will eventually cave in. The big issue is that AT&T techs said they had no idea what caused the network failure. No Idea. That is scary. Almost as scary as my next Sprint bill.
just found this today.

this is the blog of the that 17 year old kid from NJ who was the first to unlock the iPhone. It was all done via hardware. His latest post (as of 2/8) claims to have an all software unlock hack, so if you can find an iphone w/o getting the service contract, you should be able to do it yourself. i’m downloading the hack as instructions are bundled in the .rar and am going to try and do a bit more research to see how much work is involved and check stability. do the same if you have time.
I have read some about this and heard that apple estimates over 100,000 phones have been unlocked. I would be just a bit nervous about unlocking it and then apple puts out an update that makes it unuseable.
it’s always a possibility but i would feel that apple would be very reluctant to do this. probably only if at&t really pressured them to do so, which i haven’t heard any grumplings yet.
also, like this page style better than the one i saw sun.
Here is an article describing just such an evil plan by apple. The only way around this is to not update your iphone. Here is the link. http://gizmodo.com/338948/
